The surfaces of equipment that have previously come into touch with carbon (mild) steel are the principal source of contamination. It’s possible to spread and transfer carbon steel and oxide scale to stainless steel surfaces. While having handled equipment specifically made for use with stainless steel is not always practicable, it should be done whenever possible (for instance, using synthetic material slings). Prior to using with stainless steel, all other handling equipment should be well cleaned. Because cleaning is frequently overlooked when handling equipment is used randomly, contamination ensues, it is therefore advisable to organise and schedule the handling of stainless steel.

For maintenance purposes, do not print, lacquer, or varnish stainless steel. Regularly cleaning the metal is safer and simpler than relying on a covering of any kind as protection.

Look for the source of the rust in some iron or steel that is not truly a component of the stainless steel itself. When rust streaks emerge on stainless steel, it can sometimes give the impression that the material is rusting. By using stainless steel wire brushes and abrasives during grinding, steel (ferrous) contamination is avoided.

Regular deposits of grease, grime, and similar contaminations can be removed with water and soap or detergent. Washing should be followed by a water rinse and thorough drying. deposits of food, oil, grease, and grit that are firmly adhered. With the right professional cleaners, atmospheric stains and other mild discolorations can be removed.
